Quite naturally, he began photographing his friends’ exploits in the mountains, often at the cutting edge of outdoor sports, and the changing mountain light, which he now knows to be unique.

Cool Cats

Food & Drink More info

"Street-food" comes to CHAMFEST!

Cool Cats hot dogs is a concept inspired by street food from all over the world, with a focus on locally sourced produce and homemade products. The sausages are being made by local butchers and spiced with seasoning that can be found in local forests or gardens. The bread is made by carefully selected local bakers and delivered fresh each morning.

Street food for us means dishes that focus 100% on a combination of flavours and focus on taste and ingredients, presented in simple, colourful ways.

These hot dogs are a pleasure to eat and just one bite is enough to make us feel like travelling the world.

So, who's hungry? Come and taste one of our delicious hot-dogs at our stall.

Black Crows

Village More info

Freedom under your sole

The Chamonix-born ski brand and brainchild of two freeride skiers is taking part in the first ever CHAMFEST. Although somewhat intimidated by this prospect, Black Crows is giving CHAMFEST festival-goers the opportunity to come up with a new motto and to have it printed on a pair of skis or a Gore-Tex® jacket.

Every year, our textile and ski ranges gain substantial technical improvements as well as a new graphic design and a new motto. This is where CHAMFEST festival-goers come into play: find the new motto of the Corvus ski and the Corpus jacket for the 2018/2019 season. If the mottos are selected, the winners will win a pair of skis or jacket.

The Corvus ski is an iconic ski for many reasons. It is the very first ski we created, and it was born from the desire to find a ski that could slide on all terrains of the Mont Blanc. Powerful and alpine, it is an impressive slope hunter.

The Corpus jacket is a 3-layer jacket developed in partnership with Gore-Tex®. Inspired by the shape of parkas, it bears a fishtail-cut designed for high-altitude skiing, its elegance and sobriety impeccably embody the art of Black Crows contrast.

Good luck and above all, be bold!

We are an international team putting CHAMFEST together, and we have ensured that there is plenty for our multi-lingual community to enjoy - from bilingual comedy to a great mix of French and English musicians, and much more. Some of our table talks and a small number of activities are only available in French or English, so where appropriate we have put small flags in the programme listings  so that you can be sure to attend the right ones for the language/s that you speak.

Chamonix festival stages

Our hope with CHAMFEST is to reflect and celebrate some of the things that we love most about Chamonix. In the build-up to our Chamonix festival, we interviewed local heroes to find out why they love Chamonix, and you can see their answers in our video gallery.

In honour of Chamonix's rich history, we decided to name our stages after some celebrated heroes. The main stage which will host our music programme is named after Lionel Terray, the famed 20th-century alpinist. Meanwhile our culture tent, where the table talks and comedy will take place, will be called the Edward Whymper Tent, after the English explorer who was the first to summit many peaks in the Mont Blanc Massif. Our wellness tent is also appropriately named the Namaste Tent.

Lionel Terray, in whose honour we have named our main stage, was born in the alpine city of Grenoble. He discovered Chamonix when he was 12 years old, as his father was sent here to recuperate from an illness, and by the time he had reached his 20s, he decided to make Chamonix his home. A climbing guide and ski instructor, Terray was part of the mountain resistance against Germany during the Second World War.

In the years following the war, Terray became well known as one of Chamonix's best climbers, gaining attention for his rapid ascents of some of the European Alps' most infamous peaks, including the Walker Spur (Grandes Jorasses) and the north face of the Eiger, and breaking previous climbing speed records. Terray died on a climb south of Grenoble in 1965, and is buried in Chamonix.

We named our cultural tent in honour of Edward Whymper. Whymper was a celebrated mountaineer who was the first to summit many peaks local to Chamonix, during the golden age of mountaineering. Between 1861 and 1865 he was the first to ascend the Aiguille d'Argentière, the Mont Dolent and the Aiguille Verte, as well as the peak that was named after him, the Pointe Whymper on the Grandes Jorasses.

But Whymper was also a true gentleman traveller of the time; a polymath who was equally a well-known author and illustrator, in addition to his fame for his alpinism. His father was an artist and wood engraver who trained his son up in the same family trade, and in 1860, Whymper travelled extensively in Europe, including in the central and western Alps, to produce a series of scenery drawings. When he later published his account of his 1860s' climbing exploits, in his book Scrambles amongst the Alps, it was illustrated with his own engravings. Whymper passed away in 1911 in Chamonix, and is also buried in the cemetery located next to Les Planards.
